Storage of Red Blood Cell Concentrates (RBC)

STOCKAGE.jpg

The RBCs obtained from apheresis or whole blood donation are stored in a solution of SAGM (Saline Adenine Glucose Mannitol) for 42 days. This preservation solution helps to preserve the metabolism of red blood cells, maintain the integrity of the membrane of red blood cells and the level of 2-3 DPG, adjust the hematocrit, reduce viscosity and hemolysis in the pockets. These RGCs are stored between 2 and 6°C in order to reduce bacterial risks.

In the years to come, RCCs will be able to undergo a new treatment in order to inactivate any viruses that may be present. These techniques are under development and experimentation.
